I don't know... I might still go with magic because most might not... unless one of you lot are dying to use it because you are well versed in its use... it seems more dangerous to the caster than those he uses it on, though. I mean, a fireball spell is a D4 Drain spell... it can do the same damage to a group of targets as a simpler Powerball spell (which is an S2 drain spell) or the easier Manaball (S1 drain) which is the same thing but ONLY affects living things. Both do the same damage (L2, which is Light damage with a staging of 2) Right off, the S (serious) is a level less damage/drain than the D (Deadly) but the big deal is the staging of both... Manaball is only 1, Powerball is only 2, but Fire Ball is 4! this means you need to get a number of successes equal to the staging to push damage up (if attacking) or down (if saving both in an attack against you or as the caster saving from Drain damage) of 4 per LEVEL of the damage rating... so to save from casting a Fireball so that you do no damage to yourself is 16 successes!!!! While Powerball is only 6 successes and Manaball is only 3 to take no drain. Now, if you read all that, its OK that you might not do magic because that has to do with regular damage anyway... an assault rifle has a damage code of 4M3... the M means Medium damage (the scale is Light, Medium, Serious, and Deadly. Light deals 1 box, medium deals 3 boxes, Serious deals 6 boxes and deadly deals all remaining boxes) The 3 (as mentioned before) is the staging... staging is how many successes are required to push the damage up (or down in a save). So if you roll at least 3 successes firing the assault rifle, you push the damage up to Serious.. if you rolled 6, it becomes Deadly. (After deadly, it starts to negate armor). The 4 relates only to the person trying to save from the damage as that is the target number he needs to roll to save from damage. Staging is the same. (The attack target number is based on range plus whatever other modifiers might come into play). SO... can someone more well versed in the system confirm for me that the way I am figuring this all up is actually how it goes? I believe you summarized that correctly! I am now going to have a drink!

I believe you summarized that correctly! I am now going to have a drink! heheh OK, good. Though, I realized that I misquoted Fireball... it was a D3, not D4... Hellblast was D4. I think the damage system is needlessly complicated... but definitely provides a NEW (for something created in the early 80 being "new") and different way to deal with damage. That is one of the fun things about playing in new/different systems. Its not all just a mass of hit points and losing chunks of them at a time. Magic is interesting and exceptionally dangerous. You cast a spell to do something a simple cyber implant will do essentially forever and risk pain and suffering for only a limited time off effect. Still, there is something 'fun' about magic. I'm probably going to make four characters, actually... just for 'fun' to see how it works... a Human Detective (Mostly skills), a "Cyber Samurai"... possibly an orc, maybe a human for a ridiculous amount of cyber tech and a human caster and either an elf or an orc caster to see the differences between the two. One will probably be a mage and the other a shaman. I don't know how its going to go, but I like doing stuff like this... building. I can't stop doing it. If it isn't creating characters and figuring out how to mix and match different abilities its designing RPGs QUESTION! Don't worry PB, I'll probably be staying away from magic on this one. Initial concept idea was a wandering cybernetic ninja, very Genji from Overwatch influences. Maybe a bodyguard of sorts for your squishy and volatile mage concept if you go that route? Backup idea is a naive well-to-do rigger who's in over his head with this new life he chose out of a misguided sense of adventure.
Edit: Other idea is a big dumb nice and socially awkward troll brawler. Lenny from Of Mice and Men.

GM approved! Problem is that's easily the most brain melting build for me so assistance and patience would be appreciated lol.

My mage will probably need a bodyguard after he lobs a fireball and passes out in the first turn

PB your magic post made me wish for a swift and painless death. I’ll be staying well clear of any Magics with my char! Lol
Still coming up with a fun concept tho myself...

There is one advantage that it has; you can be unarmed and apparently harmless, even stripped of all your cybertech. But the magician can still cast... Assuming you don't learn all your spells using fetishes and the like.

Shadowrun keeps sliding off of my table...I’m worried about me being so rusty and with all of the dark in the world right now...I don’t know if my heart is into more dark. I’ve known three people who have passed and that weighs a little heavy on my soul. I’d like to run something a bit more positive...staying with the new game theme, I’d like to run Star Trek Adventures, modiphius. This partially is due to me wanting to run something my friend Kalan, Vince, would have like to have played in.
I’ll post in recruitment.
